Merchant Navy vs Indian Navy  This blog will going to be a little different as we are going to see various aspects of two major sector of Indian Maritime i.e. Merchant Navy and Indian Navy, and at last we will decide which is better in which aspects. Please don’t get this wrong if you don’t find your favorite being not better in any aspect on this blog. Your point of view may be different, comment below and share what you think. Both are serving different duties and there should not be any comparison but as many of them asked me about the differnce between them so for that I am writing this blog.                                 

First let’s know about both of them in short.

MERCHANT NAVY 

Merchant navy is the Backbone of international trade, carrying cargo all over the world. The merchant ships employ a huge number of workers to carry and deliver goods from one country to another.

INDIAN NAVY

 

   The Indian Navy is a well     balanced and cohesive three-         dimensional force, capable of operating above, on and under the surface of oceans, efficiently safeguarding India.
   The three commands are:
   1. The Western Naval Command
   2. The Eastern Naval Command
   3. The Southern Naval Command

Various aspects we are going to discuss are:

1. Eligibility Criteria
 
How to join Merchant navy 
 
1. Finish class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. 
2. Candidates have to be unmarried Indian citizens (male or female)
3. Normal vision is required. glasses up to plus or minus 25 may be allowed for engineering side.
4. Admission is through a Entrance examinations followed by interview and medical test.
5. For joining private college you should clear IMU CET exam and cadet should have PCM aggregate marks greater then 60%.
6. For Government college the cadets should clear IMU CET exam and should get their name in              counselling list.
 
How to join Indian Navy 
 
1. The candidates can go by NDA or CDS
2. Candidates have to be unmarried.
3. INET is conducted an entrance exam for joining Indian Navy .
4. SSB medical test should be qualify 
5. According to various entrance exams result and medical test you will gone through training.
 
Here, in this aspect I think the eligibility criteria for Merchant Navy is simple but we should not forget that for doing merchant navy course we have to pay a big amount while doing Indian Navy you don’t have to give money at all. So, both are tied in this aspect.
 
2. Employment Rate.
 
Merchant Navy Job
 
The Merchant Navy is a International Trade Business system. While India is facing one of its worth unemployment crises among the youth, the employment crisis has been there in Merchant Navy too but , according to data from 2018 there has been rose in employment rate by 35%. This is a good sign for all the aspirant cadets out there. The foreign employment figures also went up by 12,133 during the period 2017-2018. The Indian government has taken initiatives to enhance the classroom training by including on-board training into the training curriculum in 2016.
 
Indian Navy Job
 
In Indian Navy youths can go from NDA, CDS and now INET is also there. Along with that Indian navy regularly send notifications about vacancies on different posts. If we see officer posts on Indian navy, NDA and CDS are conducted every year twice. The vacancies for officers may not be always available. Chosen ones can  only join here.
 
Here, by above mentioning facts the Indian Navy have better employment rate than Merchant Navy regardless of Posts.

 

3. Age of Retirement
 
Merchant Navy
 
In merchant navy actually there is not retirement age. The higher post a seafarer can go is Master. Older the Master better the Master. The experience is all which matter out at sea. The job in Merchant Navy is contractual basis. As long as you are fit and passing medical tests you can serve the oceans.
 
Indian Navy
 
In Indian Navy the retirement age is 52 years and maximum can be about 62 years. But if you see some statistics persons left Indian Navy averagely around age of 47 and maximum of them join Merchant Navy
 
Here, the clear winner is Merchant Navy.
 
4.Salary
 
Merchant Navy Salary 
 
In Merchant Navy, the salary can range from anywhere between Rs.12000 to Rs.8 lakhs per month though the pay structure differ from company to company, city to city, the export-import needs, seniority etc. All crew members and officers are given free meals on board and senior officers can take along their wives for the voyage.
                          A Junior Engineer on a ship can earn around Rs. 30,000 per month with free boarding and lodging while signed on board the vessel. The next level is of Second Engineer and finally, Chief Engineer on a ship. As you keep getting promoted, your salary increases substantially. A Chief Engineer at sea earns Rs. 10 lakhs per month or more net of taxes. It takes about 6-7 years for a Junior Engineer Officer to get promoted to the rank of Chief Engineer, depending on individual capabilities and job opportunities available.
                           A Third Officer’s salary is around Rs. 50,000 per month plus free boarding and lodging while on board.Next levels in increasing order of seniority are Second Officer, a Chief Officer and Captain of a ship. A Captain’s pay package is Rs. 10 lakhs per month or more net of taxes. It takes about 8 years for a Third Officer to get promoted to the rank of Captain, depending on individual capabilities and the job opportunities available.
                         Besides this, imported liquor, cigarettes, canned foods, cosmetics are available on board duty free. They are also entitled to four month leave every year. The interesting fact is that there is no income tax return imposed on the earnings of a merchant navy professional.

There is difference between Merchant Navy and Indian Navy. But they are doing their own duties and they both are well in their own respective ways.
